Mac Pro reportedly faces long pause with no major update planned

Apple’s top desktop once stood as the machine creative professionals relied on. Today, that future looks uncertain. Apple has not updated the Mac Pro since 2023, and the company does not plan to refresh it anytime soon. The device still runs on the M2 Ultra chip while other high-end Macs have already moved ahead.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that Apple has “largely written off the Mac Pro.” He writes that “the sentiment internally is that the Mac Studio now represents both the present and future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy.” Gurman also says the Mac Pro that was supposed to ship with an M4 Ultra chip “was nixed,” and the work on that chip stopped inside the company.

Mac Studio takes the lead

This shift leaves the Mac Studio as Apple’s main focus for powerful desktop performance. Gurman notes that the next high-end chip, the M5 Ultra, is “only destined for the Mac Studio.” He adds that “the Mac Pro won’t be updated in 2026 in a significant way,” which points to a long gap before any major upgrade happens.

Professionals who once depended on the Mac Pro now face a clear direction. Apple is pushing its desktop lineup toward smaller, more efficient machines, even if that means stepping away from a product with a long history. You still get strong performance from the Mac Studio, but it also signals a quiet shift in Apple’s long-term hardware priorities.

Unless Apple makes an unexpected move, the Mac Pro remains frozen in place while the rest of the lineup moves forward.
