An Apple customer says a request for battery and screen service on a 2020 Intel MacBook Air ended with an unexpected replacement offer: an M5 MacBook Air. The claim comes from a Reddit post and describes one support case, not a replacement program Apple has announced.
The customer said the older 13-inch Retina MacBook Air had become slow and had a worn battery. They contacted Apple to ask whether battery and display service was still available, then said a senior advisor offered a newer MacBook Air after a short hold.

Reddit user reports an M5 MacBook Air replacement
According to the Reddit post, the customer still had AppleCare coverage on the 2020 model. They said Apple asked them to disable Find My, sign out of iCloud, erase the Mac, and return it. The user also shared an image of what they described as a replacement confirmation email.
The post says the advisor offered an M5 MacBook Air without first completing diagnostics during the call. The customer said Apple would also refund the unused portion of the current AppleCare contract. The account has not been independently verified by Apple, and the company has not commented on this particular case.
Replacement options depend on the individual repair
Apple’s Mac laptop repair page says it inspects a device before providing a personalized estimate. It also says service options can vary by location and parts availability. An active AppleCare plan can affect what is covered, while normal battery wear is not covered by the standard limited warranty.
Apple does not promise that an older Mac will be exchanged for a current model when parts are unavailable. A repair or replacement decision can depend on the exact configuration, the condition of the Mac, the available parts, local consumer-law rights, and the customer’s coverage.
Apple says equipment provided during repair or replacement may include new or previously used genuine parts that have passed its functional requirements. That means a replacement outcome will not necessarily match the reported M5 offer, even for another customer with the same 2020 MacBook Air.
What Mac owners should take from the report
The useful takeaway is not that a battery service request will turn into a free upgrade. It is that owners of older Macs with active coverage can check their options directly with Apple, especially when a repair involves more than one component.
Before arranging service, back up the Mac, check coverage through Apple’s support tools, and be ready to remove Find My if Apple instructs you to send the computer in. Apple’s repair page offers mail-in and in-person service paths, but it cannot predict a replacement result before the device is assessed.
