Apple has released a new beta firmware update for AirPods following the launch of the iOS 27 developer beta. The update prepares supported AirPods models for several new features announced during WWDC 2026, including a long-awaited Custom EQ option and Apple GymKit syncing.
The new beta firmware is available for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4. To access the latest features, users will need both the iOS 27 developer beta and the latest AirPods beta firmware installed on their devices.
How to Update AirPods Firmware
Installing AirPods beta firmware is now much easier than before.
- Install the iOS 27 Developer Beta on your iPhone.
- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods.
- Select AirPods Beta Updates.
- Enable beta firmware updates.
- Keep your AirPods charging and near your iPhone.
- The firmware will download and install automatically in the background.
Custom EQ Comes to AirPods
One of the biggest additions is Custom EQ. Users can now adjust audio frequencies manually through a new equalizer interface, allowing more control over bass, mids, and treble. This gives AirPods owners the ability to personalize sound across music, movies, TV shows, and calls.
Apple has offered limited audio presets in the past, but this update introduces a much more flexible sound customization system.
Apple GymKit Syncing
Apple is also adding GymKit syncing support for AirPods. While Apple has not shared extensive details yet, the feature is designed to improve integration between AirPods and compatible fitness equipment, making workouts more connected and convenient.
Previously, installing AirPods beta firmware often required additional tools and a Mac. Apple has simplified the process by adding a dedicated AirPods Beta Updates section directly inside the Settings app, making it much easier for developers to test new features.
Should You Install It?
Since this is beta firmware, users should expect possible bugs, battery issues, or performance problems. If you rely on your AirPods every day, waiting for the public beta or final release may be the safer option.
