OLED MacBook Air Still Years Away, Analyst Predicts 2028 or 2029 Launch

Apple’s new MacBook Neo has just reached stores, and the launch also brings fresh discussion about the future of Apple’s laptop lineup. Analysts who track Apple’s supply chain continue to point toward a major display change in the coming years. One of the most talked-about updates involves the MacBook Air eventually moving to OLED technology, which many expect to deliver deeper contrast, richer colors, and improved efficiency.

The Neo itself sits at the center of Apple’s push into the lower-priced laptop segment. The company introduced the $599 model with a 13-inch display and the A18 Pro chip, while offering colors such as silver, indigo, blush, and citrus. Early estimates suggest the laptop will sell in strong numbers as Apple tries to attract students and first-time Mac buyers.

Supply chain analyst Ming Chi Kuo recently shared his latest outlook on Apple’s laptop roadmap and shipment forecasts.

“MacBook Air is expected to adopt OLED panels around 2028 or 2029,” Ming Chi Kuo said.

Kuo also repeated earlier claims that Apple plans a bigger redesign for the MacBook Pro first. According to his latest checks, Apple is preparing a MacBook Pro model with OLED touch panels for release in late 2026 or early 2027. Those panels will likely mark the first major display upgrade for the MacBook line in years.

The MacBook Air follows later on Apple’s roadmap, with OLED models expected near the end of the decade. That schedule suggests Apple plans to introduce the technology in premium MacBook Pro models before bringing it to the lighter and more affordable Air lineup.
