OpenAI has added Codex support to the ChatGPT mobile app, giving users a new way to manage coding tasks from an iPhone, iPad, or Android device while away from their computer. The update connects the mobile app to Codex running on Macs and remote development environments, letting users review work, approve actions, and continue projects directly from their phone.
The company says the feature goes beyond simple remote control because users can access active threads, switch models, review outputs, approve commands, and start new tasks without returning to their desktop. Codex keeps running on the connected machine while the ChatGPT app streams updates such as screenshots, terminal logs, diffs, test results, and approvals in real time.
OpenAI explained that the system uses a secure relay layer that keeps connected devices reachable without exposing them directly to the public internet. The setup also syncs session context across devices signed into the same ChatGPT account, which helps users continue long-running work without interruption.
How Codex mobile access works
Users first need the latest version of the Codex app on macOS and the updated ChatGPT app on iOS or Android. After setup, Codex for Mac displays a QR code that users scan through the ChatGPT mobile app to connect their device.
Once connected, developers can:
- Start bug investigations remotely
- Review and approve code changes
- Follow terminal activity and test results
- Continue long-running refactors from their phone
- Send new prompts and instructions while away from their desk
OpenAI says more than 4 million people now use Codex every week, and the company believes mobile access helps teams keep projects moving during short breaks, commutes, meetings, and customer calls.
The update also expands Codex support for enterprise environments with Remote SSH, Hooks, and programmatic access tokens. OpenAI confirmed that support for remotely controlling Codex on Windows will arrive later.
