Spotify Adds New Controls to Turn Off Videos and Focus on Audio

Spotify May Let You Edit Your 'Taste Profile' With Written Notes

Spotify has introduced new settings that let users turn off most video features and focus on audio. The update aims to reduce distractions and bring the app closer to its core music experience.

Spotify now offers separate toggles to manage different types of video content. Users can disable music videos, which also converts live performances into audio-only playback. Another option allows users to turn off Canvas, which includes short looping visuals that appear during songs.

There is also a broader setting called “All other videos.” This option covers vertical videos, creator clips, and video podcasts. When turned off, these formats will play as audio only. However, Spotify confirmed that video ads will still appear, and some may include motion visuals.

The company has started rolling out these controls globally. Users can find them in Settings, under Content and display, followed by Videos and Canvas.

Spotify said the update will reach users across Free, Premium, and Basic plans. Family Plan managers can now apply these controls to all members, not just accounts for children.

Spotify stated, “We’ll also be introducing new settings so all Premium and Basic users and all users on our free service can control how video appears in their app.”

Spotify explained that many users want a more controlled and less distracting experience. The company said these tools help users shape how they interact with content on the platform.

Dustee Jenkins, Chief Public Affairs Officer at Spotify, said, “We believe that for families who prefer a music focused, distraction free environment, these tools allow them to bring the experience back to Spotify’s audio first roots.”

Spotify also shared that a large number of parents already use existing controls. The company noted that 60 percent of managed accounts for users under 13 have video disabled.

The update builds on Spotify’s broader effort to improve safety, privacy, and user control. The company plans to introduce more features in the coming months to give users and families greater flexibility.
