The newest Spider-Man movie features some familiar fighting styles if you play video games. During the premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, actor Tom Holland shared that the fighting sequences in the movie draw heavy inspiration from Insomniac’s popular Spider-Man video games. Specifically, the movie’s stunt team looked closely at the stylish finishing moves players use to defeat enemies on the PlayStation.

Holland told reporters he even played the game the night before the movie’s premiere just to pass the time and have some fun. He noted that the games heavily influenced how his version of Peter Parker ends fights in the new film. Instead of basic punches, viewers will see more web-slinging combos that feel like they were pulled straight from a console.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed that the action designers and stunt performers working on the movie were huge gamers themselves. They frequently brought screenshots and clips from the video games directly into the writers’ room. The team would analyze the digital moves and figure out how to translate those acrobatic stunts into real life using wirework and choreography.
Sony is also returning the favor to celebrate the film’s release. The company is adding Holland’s new suit from the movie directly into Spider-Man 2 as a playable outfit. The games and movies continue to share ideas, giving fans a more unified look at how the web-crawler fights on both the big screen and the television.
