WhatsApp Tests Chat History Sharing for New Group Members

WhatsApp is testing a long-requested feature that helps new group members catch up faster. The update lets groups choose whether to share recent messages when someone joins, instead of starting them at a blank chat.

WABetaInfo reports that a new WhatsApp beta on TestFlight adds an option to share recent chat history with a newly added member. Group admins or members can share “up to 100 recent messages” from the past 14 days. WhatsApp also allows users to share fewer messages if they want tighter control.

Shared messages appear in a different color. This helps new members spot what was sent before they joined without confusion.

WABetaInfo also notes a clear transparency step. WhatsApp posts a system message in the group chat that shows who shared the messages with the new member. The transfer uses the sender’s device and encryption key, and the messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption.

The feature is now limited to select beta testers on iOS and Android. WhatsApp has not shared a release date yet, but testing on both platforms suggests a wider rollout is close.
