Apple has released Xcode 27.1 beta, giving developers the SDKs and simulator tools needed to build and test apps for iPhone Duo. The beta requires a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later and includes SDKs for iOS 27.1 and Apple’s other current platforms.
For developers, the key addition is the iPhone Duo Simulator. It makes it possible to test layouts against the foldable device’s displays, poses and orientations before the hardware reaches customers. Apple is also directing developers to new design guidance on resizable interfaces, multiple scenes and camera experiences for iPhone Duo.
What to test before iPhone Duo ships
- Dynamic layouts across the device’s display states.
- Safe areas, toolbars and navigation when the device changes orientation.
- Split View and multiple-scene behavior.
- Camera interfaces and other experiences that use the foldable form factor.
Developers should still treat this as beta software. Apple’s release notes say the initial Simulator launch can take several minutes, StandBy is unavailable in the iPhone Duo Simulator runtime, and most app extensions cannot be run or debugged there. Those limitations mean a simulator pass is useful, but it is not a substitute for device testing once hardware is available.

Apps do not need to be rebuilt just to launch on iPhone Duo, but Apple’s guidance makes clear that updated layouts can use the larger, more flexible display more effectively. Developers should validate their own app’s behavior instead of assuming a phone-first interface will automatically scale well.
