Xcode 27.2 beta code completion can crash on macOS, but Apple has a workaround

Xcode 27.2 beta can crash when developers use code completion on a Mac running macOS 27.2 beta. Apple has acknowledged the problem and provided a command that turns off enhanced code-completion ranking while the company works on the prerelease software.

Apple lists the crash in both its Xcode 27.2 release notes and macOS 27.2 release notes. The documented workaround is to quit Xcode, open Terminal, and run the following preference command:

defaults write com.apple.dt.Xcode CodeCompletionAssetsToLoad /dev/null

What the workaround changes

The command changes an Xcode preference so the app does not load the assets used for enhanced completion ranking. It is not a general macOS repair, and Apple does not say that it fixes other Xcode crashes. Developers should use it only when their problem matches the documented combination of Xcode 27.2 beta, macOS 27.2 beta, and code completion.

Because the workaround disables part of the completion system, suggestions may be ranked differently until the preference is removed or Apple supplies a fixed beta. Apple’s notes do not provide a reversal command or promise a date for a permanent fix. Teams should record the preference change so it is not mistaken for the default configuration later.

The issue also does not affect every Xcode configuration. Xcode 27.2 beta requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later, but Apple specifically ties this known crash to macOS 27.2 beta. Developers who are not testing that macOS beta should avoid changing the preference preemptively.

MacObserver’s coverage of Xcode’s newer coding features explains how much of the developer environment now depends on intelligent suggestions and agents. This bug is narrower, but it can interrupt basic editing. If a production workflow depends on Xcode, Apple’s beta guidance still favors testing prerelease tools away from critical projects and keeping a stable toolchain available.
