The Camera Control button on iPhone 18 Pro does not have to open Apple’s Camera app. Apple Support publishes a separate guide, “Use the Camera Control to open another app,” that covers pointing the button at Magnifier, Code Scanner or a third-party camera app instead, and the same Settings > Camera > Camera Control screen holds the single-click and double-click choice and the Lock Focus and Exposure option.
Camera Control carries over from the iPhone 17 Pro generation, and Apple’s overview describes it simply as a button for instant photo and video access. What is less known is that the launch target is a setting, so a barcode-heavy job or a low-vision user can make the button do something else entirely.

What Camera Control does by default
Out of the box, Apple Support says a click opens Camera, a second click takes a photo, and a click and hold records video. If Camera is already set to Video mode when it opens, a single click starts recording.

A light press twice opens an overlay with the settings for the current mode. Apple Support lists Exposure, Depth, Zoom, Cameras, Styles and Tone, and notes that not all controls are available in all camera modes. Sliding a finger along the button scrolls through those settings and adjusts them, and the last setting you used reappears on the next light press.
That is the behaviour most iPhone 18 Pro camera coverage focuses on. The three alternatives below replace only the first step, the app that a click launches.

Apple’s guide does not mention non-camera apps such as a notes or payments app, so this is not a general-purpose launcher. The Action button remains the customizable control for other shortcuts, and Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro overview lists it separately.
How to change what the button opens
These steps follow Apple’s published description and may differ slightly once iOS 27 ships on September 14. Apple Support’s guide currently shows the iOS 26 selector.
- Open Settings on your iPhone 18 Pro.
- Tap Camera, then tap Camera Control.
- Choose Single Click or Double Click. Apple Support lists both as the ways a click can open the assigned app.
- Pick the app the button should launch. Apple Support’s “Use the Camera Control to open another app” guide names Magnifier, Code Scanner and third-party camera apps as the choices.
- Return to the Lock Screen or Home Screen and click Camera Control to confirm the chosen app opens.
To get the stock Camera back, return to the same screen and reassign it. The overlay customization also lives here under Customize.
Single click vs double click, and the accessibility options
Apple Support gives two open behaviours, Single Click and Double Click. Double Click is the option to pick if you find the button opening an app in your pocket, since it requires two deliberate presses.
For people who find the light press hard to register, Apple Support says accessibility options adjust the pressure required for a light press and the speed required for a double press. Those settings apply whichever app the button launches.
Lock Focus and Exposure is a separate toggle on the same page. It is a Camera app feature, so it does not apply when the button launches Magnifier or Code Scanner.
If it does not work
- A third-party app is missing from the list: Apple limits the option to camera apps, so other kinds of app will not appear.
- The button opens the app but a click does nothing after that: the click-to-shoot and overlay behaviours are documented by Apple for its own Camera app; Apple has not published how third-party apps handle them.
- Visual intelligence does not respond: Apple Support says it needs Apple Intelligence turned on, which requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone on iOS 27.
- The steps look different on your phone: Apple Support’s guide is written for iOS 26 and the iOS 27 version may move things.
What Apple has not said
- The exact label of the app picker on the Camera Control settings screen; Apple’s guide names the apps but we have not quoted its menu wording.
- Whether a light press or the overlay does anything inside Magnifier or Code Scanner.
- Which third-party camera apps support Camera Control on iPhone 18 Pro.
- Whether iOS 27 changes any of these settings.
