The 2TB iPhone Duo costs $3,199 and the 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max costs $2,499, according to Apple’s Store page, a difference of $700. That gap is the same at every storage tier, so the question at the top of the range is the same one buyers face at the bottom: what does $700 buy, and what does it give up.

Both phones use the A20 Pro chip and both are capped at 2TB, which makes this the most direct comparison Apple’s 2026 lineup offers. Our Duo versus Pro Max comparison covered the base models; this piece lines up the top tiers and their specs from Apple’s tech specs and press releases.

What the extra $700 buys

The money goes on the second display and the mechanism that makes it possible. Apple’s inner 7.6-inch panel is 50 percent larger than the Pro Max’s 6.9-inch screen by Apple’s own measure, with a nano-texture finish that Apple says minimizes the visible crease. The 5.4-inch outer display keeps more than 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area for closed use. Both are ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On and rated at 3000 nits peak outdoors, the same brightness figure Apple gives the Pro Max.

The frame is Grade 5 titanium with a hinge of more than 100 components and a 3D-printed hinge cover in 100 percent recycled titanium, against the Pro Max’s aluminum unibody. Open, the Duo is 5.2 mm thick, which Apple calls its thinnest iPhone display ever; closed, it is 11.3 mm against the Pro Max’s 8.75 mm, and it weighs 5 g more at 254 g.

Software is part of the purchase too. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1 rather than 27.0 and adds Split View for two apps side by side, an upgraded StandBy and a Call Context widget. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on both displays is promised for later in 2026. The Duo also includes Messages, Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance via satellite free for two years.

What the $700 gives up

The camera is the clearest loss. The Pro Max has three 48MP Fusion sensors, including a 4x tetraprism telephoto at 100 mm and the variable-aperture main camera that runs from f/1.48 to f/4, for a 16x optical-quality zoom range. The Duo has two 48MP sensors, a fixed f/1.6 main and the same Ultra Wide, giving a 4x optical-quality range and 10x digital zoom. Our Duo camera explainer has the detail; Apple’s own Camera Control button and Duo-only tricks like Smart Take and Duo Preview soften the gap without closing it.

Battery endurance is lower on paper. Apple rates the Duo at 24 hours of typical use, assuming equal inner and outer display time, against 30 hours for the Pro Max. Video playback is close, 44 hours on the outer display against 45, but drops to 31 hours if you watch on the big inner screen. The Duo also charges more slowly, reaching 50 percent in about 20 minutes on a 60W adapter against about 15 minutes for the Pro Max.

  • No telephoto lens and no variable aperture on the Duo
  • Touch ID instead of Face ID
  • Six fewer hours of Apple-rated typical use
  • eSIM-only worldwide, where the Pro Max keeps a SIM tray outside 12 markets
  • A five-week wait: October 23 against September 18

Is the 2TB Duo the right place to spend $3,199?

At $3,199, the 2TB Duo is $700 more than a 2TB Pro Max and $1,200 more than a 256GB Duo. Another way to spend the same money is a 2TB Pro Max at $2,499 plus AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149, which comes to $2,648 and still leaves $551 against the Duo; the 1TB Pro Max at $1,899 leaves a full $1,300.

The Duo is the choice if the 7.6-inch screen and Split View are the point. The Pro Max is the choice if the camera is, and its 45-hour battery rating is the better fit for long days. Apple has not published Duo prices outside the US, so this comparison is US-only until the regional Store pages update. Pre-orders open October 16 for the Duo; the Pro Max is available from September 18.
