iPhone, iPad Dominate Mobile Video Viewing Market

TMO Talk (18)

Apple’s iOS platform, which includes the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, accounts for some 80 percent of the small but growing mobile video viewing market, according to a study (PDF) by the video monetization company FreeWheel. Based on the company’s research, Google’s Android OS made up nearly all of the remaining 20 percent, and all other mobile platforms accounting for less than one percent of mobile video viewers.

The iPhone and iPod touch each made up 30 percent of the mobile viewing devices, and the iPad accounted for another 20 percent.

“This majority reflects the number of these devices in market and their early dominance in the smart-device sector,” the FreeWheel report said. “It also reflects the development priorities of content producers and distributors: they optimized their content first for the Apple platforms, with Android a later priority.”

Apple’s dominance in the mobile video market doesn’t, however, signal an end to the control Adobe’s Flash has over online content. While video for iOS devices can’t be encoded as Flash because the devices don’t support the format, mobile video makes up only about one percent of the Internet’s video offerings.

Despite the small percentage of mobile video viewers compared to the overall market, the fact that companies are paying attention to on-the-go consumers says a lot about where they see the future of Internet media — and for now Apple is leading the pack.

Could someone please define what’s meant by ‘mobile video’.

Going out on a “limn” I would say that it is video that lights up our mobile devices.

But apparently it’s not YouTube. It’s not Porn, It’s not Flikr. Those would be way over the 1% figure. It’s not just any old video that we watch on our portable devices. It’s some subset of videos that are special in some way. I get that from the second to the last paragraph.

Geoduck yes there is video formatted/optimized for mobile devices. When exporting from say QuickTime to put the video on a web page the process creates several movie files and code. Visit the page from a Mac, and presumably over broadband, you see one version of the video. Visit from an iPhone, and presumably over 3G, you see a different version.

Ok I get it. It’s not a subset of videos (by subject or vendor for example), it’s the subset of videos that have been optimized to run on portable devices.

gotcha. TYVM

Thanks for the question, geoduck and the answer Sir Henry.

Going out on a limn.
Obviously doesn’t brake your crane of thought by any stretch, Sir H.

My crane of thought gives me a lift smile

I am thinking, just as a joke, of creating a webpage titled Sexy Videos. Have a plugin check in the header look for Flash. If it finds it then the visitor is redirected to an error page that tells them they need to remove Flash before viewing the videos.

Sir H said . . . visitor is redirected to an error page . . .

or for the more visually stimulated, a picture of a naked Bill Gates, a towel held open around his waist, and butt extended. Now that would be some Flash.

After thinking about it I would name the page “Sexy Free Videos” and populate with innocent (free of sex) videos maybe some of the birds that I “shot” at my backyard feeder. However a naked Bill Gates would certainly be “Sexy Free.” smile

You’re too swift today, Sir, with your flights of sensual fantasy. And lunch shall be served and secured without such images, on the back porch, just in case the image lingers. Three words that ne’er do well together, Messieurs Gates, Sexy and Free.
