People on Reddit as well as The Mac Observer staff are seeing an update on macOS Big Sur on Thursday.

Apple hasn’t listed details on its support page and the update itself only says “This update ensures proper updating and restoring for iOS and iPadOS devices with a Mac.”

We’ve reached out to Apple for comment.
I believe this is to allow the new iPhones (13) and iPads (mini etc) to work well with previous MacOS versions. In past years this would come as an iTunes update, but since that function was absorbed by the Finder, we get this instead.
When my computer restarted after this update, a message about updated wacom tablet drivers came onscreen. (M1 Mac Mini)
