If you plan to buy a HomePod mini, you may want to wait a bit. Stock shortages and a recent retailer update hint that Apple could be preparing to launch a refreshed version of the small smart speaker soon.
The original HomePod mini arrived in 2020, and Apple added new colors a year later. Since then, it has received no internal upgrades. But recently, multiple signs point to a new model on the horizon.
Retailers List It as Discontinued
B&H, one of Apple’s major retail partners, now lists the HomePod mini as “discontinued” (via macrumors). Other stores are showing similar signs. Target and Walmart have several colors marked out of stock, while pickup availability at Apple Stores is becoming limited to select flagship locations.
Adorama lists the product as backordered, and Staples has none available online. Some colors are unavailable at Verizon and Best Buy as well. These stock constraints suggest Apple could be winding down production of the current model.
What to Expect from the Next Model
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman earlier reported that Apple has been testing a new HomePod mini with an updated S-series chip, improved wireless and ultra-wideband connectivity, and better audio quality. He also mentioned new color options, including red.
The timing of the next release remains unclear, but with major retailers running out of stock and listings marked as discontinued, an updated version could likely appear before the end of 2025.
Should You Wait?
If you already own a HomePod mini, you can keep using it without concern. But if you’re planning to buy one, holding off for a few more weeks could pay off. A new model would likely perform better, connect faster, and fit more smoothly into Apple’s expanding smart home ecosystem.
