A routine trip to the store turned into a massive police search in Hamburg after someone stole a bicycle with a sleeping four-year-old still inside the attached trailer. The parents had briefly left the bike outside a shop on Kieler Street. When they returned, both the bike and their child were missing. Thankfully, the parents had hidden an Apple AirTag on the bike.
This Apple device allowed local officers to track the exact location and end the terrifying situation in a matter of minutes without any injuries.
The AirTag helped to find the missing child
As soon as the parents realized the bike was gone, police launched a large rescue effort. They brought in patrol cars, motorcycles, and even a helicopter to look for the child. But the real breakthrough came from the small tracking device.
The AirTag pinged its location to a nearby hardware store. Officers went straight to the spot and found the bicycle. The child was completely unharmed and actually still asleep in the trailer.
Finding the suspect and understanding what happened
Police arrested a 58-year-old woman at the scene. They noted that she appeared intoxicated and mentally unstable. Officers believe she likely just wanted to take the bicycle and had no idea a child was sleeping in the back.
While Apple originally designed the AirTag to help people find lost keys or bags, cases like this show how it can help in serious emergencies. The tracker relies on nearby Apple devices to bounce a location signal back to the owner. Because Hamburg is a dense city with lots of phones around, the network updated the bike’s location almost instantly.
Apple does not explicitly sell the AirTag as a safety device for people, but it continues to prove useful for finding stolen property when things suddenly go wrong.
