YouTube Is Replacing Basic Search With AI-Powered Conversations for Some Users

YouTube is testing AI search for Premium users, offering conversational prompts, video highlights, summaries, and smarter personalized discovery.

YouTube is testing a new AI-powered search feature that changes how users discover videos by making search feel more like a real conversation instead of a traditional keyword-based experience.

The new tool allows YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S. to ask detailed questions in natural language, receive AI-generated summaries, and explore both short and long videos with highlighted segments that directly match their request.

This experimental feature is available through YouTube Labs, Google’s opt-in testing platform for early-stage tools. Users can type prompts such as planning a multi-day road trip, redesigning a living room, or cooking specific recipes, and Ask YouTube delivers a mix of text answers and relevant video recommendations.

The feature focuses on deeper, more personalized search experiences by allowing follow-up questions, which makes finding detailed content faster and more interactive. This shift positions YouTube search closer to AI assistants while keeping video discovery at the center of the experience.

YouTube is also testing other AI tools through Labs, including music insights and Shorts coaching features, as it continues expanding AI across its platform before the current search test ends on June 8.
