The coin officially went on sale today as part of the American Innovation program. While it carries a face value of one dollar, the actual price to get your hands on one is quite a bit higher.
Buyers must purchase the new coins directly from the mint website
The new dollar coin features a picture of a young Jobs sitting in front of a classic Northern California landscape. He is wearing his familiar turtleneck and jeans. The design also includes the phrase “Make Something Wonderful,” which comes from an internal company meeting in 2007.
To get these coins, you have to visit the official United States Mint website. You cannot just buy a single coin. The government sells them in bulk packages. You can choose a roll of 25 coins for $61, which makes them cost $2.44 each. If you want more, you can grab a bag of 100 coins for $154.50. That brings the price down to about $1.55 per coin.
The government sets strict household limits on total coin orders
Because this is a special release for the former Apple CEO, the mint wants to make sure enough people get a chance to buy them. The agency placed a strict limit on how many items you can order. Right now, each household can only buy up to ten bags and ten rolls.
The entire production run is capped at 25,950 coins. Once they sell out, the mint will not make any more. You get to choose if you want your coins made in Denver or Philadelphia when you check out. This release is part of a larger project celebrating innovation across all fifty states, and California selected the tech leader to represent its contribution to modern history.
For anyone interested in collecting a small tribute to the pioneer, acting quickly is the best move. Given the limited supply and high demand for memorabilia, these unique dollar coins will likely disappear from the store soon.
