Apple’s long-rumored Siri rebuild is starting to look much bigger than a chatbot upgrade, and a new report says iOS 27 will introduce a system-wide “Search or Ask” gesture that puts Siri, ChatGPT, and Gemini directly into the iPhone interface.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to turn Siri into an “always-on agent” that can understand personal data, work across apps, and handle more natural conversations through a redesigned interface that lives inside the Dynamic Island. The report also says users will activate a new universal search experience by swiping down from the top-center of the screen from anywhere in iOS.
“Users can also activate a new system search by swiping down from the top center of the screen anywhere. When a user does that, a ‘Search or Ask’ bar in the Dynamic Island will appear.”
The report says the new interface looks similar to Spotlight Search but delivers “more advanced results and additional data from within apps.” Users will also see a microphone button for voice interactions, while the search field itself will let them switch between Siri and third-party AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini.
Bloomberg also reports that Apple is redesigning Siri around a chatbot-style conversation view that resembles apps like ChatGPT. Users will reportedly swipe down on Siri’s floating result card to enter a threaded conversation mode with inline app cards for weather, notes, and upcoming appointments.
“Siri will be completely rebuilt in iOS 27, moving away from being a voice assistant and becoming an always-on agent that can tap into personal data and take action across apps.”
Another notable addition involves uploads. Gurman says Apple will add a “+” button inside Siri’s standalone app and chatbot interface so users can upload images and documents directly into conversations.
The report also outlines broader iOS 27 changes, including a customizable Camera app, redesigned tab bars across Apple apps, updated keyboard animations, and refinements to the Liquid Glass interface that debuted last year.
Apple will reportedly unveil iOS 27 and the rebuilt Siri during WWDC on June 8.
