Apple is preparing one of the biggest Camera app redesigns in years with iOS 27, and the changes go far beyond visual tweaks or small feature additions. According to a new report, Apple plans to make the Camera app “fully customizable,” giving users direct control over which tools appear on screen and where they sit inside the interface.
The update looks heavily focused on flexibility, especially for users who constantly switch between casual photography and more advanced manual controls. Apple reportedly wants the Camera app to feel cleaner for regular users while also becoming much more useful for creators, photographers, and power users who want faster access to specific controls.
Mark Gurman at Bloomberg shared new details about Apple’s plans for iOS 27 and explained how the redesigned Camera app will work.
“Apple Inc. is planning to upgrade its Camera app, making the software fully customizable as part of a broader set of user interface changes coming in its next iPhone software update.
With the new approach, users will be able to choose which features appear in the Camera app and where they’re placed. That includes controls for flash, exposure, the timer and resolution.”
The biggest change is Apple’s new widget-style control system inside the Camera app. Instead of forcing everyone to use the same layout, iOS 27 reportedly lets users build their own setup depending on how they shoot photos or videos.
iOS 27 Camera app will let users customize controls
Apple reportedly plans to keep the default Camera layout for users who prefer the current experience, but advanced users will gain access to deeper customization tools through a transparent “Add Widgets” tray that slides up from the bottom of the app.
Each shooting mode gets its own customizable controls, which means Photo mode, Video mode, and other capture modes can all behave differently depending on user preferences.
According to the report, users will be able to customize:
- Flash controls
- Exposure settings
- Timer shortcuts
- Resolution settings
- Photographic Styles
- Depth-of-field controls
- Grid and level tools
- Manual camera controls
The report also says Apple reorganized parts of the interface to make these options easier to reach while shooting. One noticeable change moves the “show all controls” toggle from the top-right corner to a new position beside the shutter button, which should make one-handed use easier on larger iPhones.
Apple is also adding a new Siri-powered Camera mode
Last month’s report about a new “Siri” mode inside the Camera app now makes more sense alongside these latest details. Apple reportedly plans to place the Siri mode directly beside Photo and Video modes, allowing users to access Visual Intelligence features without leaving the Camera app.
“The updated Camera app also includes a new Siri mode alongside photo, video and other options, letting users tap into Apple’s Visual Intelligence capabilities.”
That feature reportedly handles tasks like:
- Identifying plants
- Translating text
- Recognizing objects
- Pulling information from the camera view in real time
Apple clearly wants the Camera app to become more than a tool for taking photos. The company appears to be turning it into a live AI-powered visual assistant tied closely to Siri’s upcoming redesign.
iOS 27 redesign reaches beyond the Camera app
The Camera app is only one part of Apple’s broader iOS 27 redesign effort. Bloomberg’s report says Apple is changing several major apps and system experiences across the iPhone.
Here’s what else is reportedly changing:

- Support for ChatGPT and Gemini as search providers
- Standalone Siri app with conversation history
