The next major software update for the iPhone is just around the corner, and early rumors point to some noticeable visual adjustments. When Apple announces iOS 27 this June, it will reportedly bring fresh updates to the Liquid Glass design introduced last year. While the core look remains the same, the company plans to fix lingering interface issues and give users much more control over how their screens look.
A systemwide slider gives you exact control over screen transparency
Right now, Apple gives iPhone owners exactly two choices for the Liquid Glass look: clear or tinted. Clear mode shows off the full transparent effect, while the tinted option makes everything solid. The jump between the two options is massive.
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple originally wanted to offer a smooth systemwide slider. This tool would let users dial in the exact level of transparency they want.
Gurman notes that the company tried to build this slider during the development of iOS 26. It managed to get the feature working for the lock screen clock, but ran into technical roadblocks when applying it to app folders and the home screen. If Apple solves those hurdles, this sliding scale will debut in iOS 27.
Gradual interface tweaks aim to fix minor layout annoyances
Beyond the transparency slider, Apple plans to make smaller adjustments across the entire operating system. The massive visual overhaul last year brought some fresh ideas, but it also created a few usability headaches.
Mark Gurman reports that the company is planning minor tweaks rather than another major redesign. He expects years of steady improvements, comparing the situation to the slow refinement phase that happened after the release of iOS 7.
These upcoming changes will likely address specific user complaints. For example, the current layout in music apps often shrinks the player, forcing users to tap the screen just to see basic controls. Apple will likely use iOS 27 to clean up these small frustrations and make the interface easier to navigate daily.
