Dark Winds Season 5 is officially moving forward, giving viewers another mystery involving Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito. AMC has confirmed the new season for 2027, although its exact premiere date remains unannounced.
The renewal arrived before Season 4 premiered, showing AMC’s continued confidence in the crime drama. Season 5 began production in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in March 2026 and will contain eight hour-long episodes.

AMC has not announced whether Season 5 will arrive early in 2027 or later in the year. Since Season 4 premiered on AMC and AMC+ on February 15, 2026, another February or March launch appears possible if production remains on schedule.
When could Dark Winds Season 5 come to Netflix?
Netflix has not confirmed a Season 5 release date. However, the platform’s handling of Season 4 gives us a useful timeline.
Season 4 completed its AMC run on April 5, 2026, before arriving on Netflix in the United States on July 4, 2026. That placed the Netflix release roughly three months after the AMC finale.
Should AMC follow a similar arrangement, Dark Winds Season 5 could reach Netflix around three months after its television finale. A spring 2027 AMC premiere would therefore point toward a summer or early autumn Netflix release.
This remains an estimate because streaming agreements can change between seasons. AMC and AMC+ will receive the episodes first.
What will happen in Season 5?
Spoilers ahead for the Dark Winds Season 4 finale.
Season 4 followed Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito as they searched for missing Navajo teenager Billie Tsosie. The investigation took them from the Navajo Nation to 1970s Los Angeles, where they uncovered an organized crime operation and crossed paths with Irene Vaggan.
Leaphorn eventually escaped Irene’s bunker and helped rescue Billie. However, the finale ended with a new mystery when Sheriff Gordo Sena was found murdered. His death will likely become the central investigation of Season 5.
The case could also bring the main characters back together professionally. Leaphorn had considered leaving the Navajo Tribal Police, while Chee and Manuelito were both facing decisions about their careers and relationship.
Dark Winds Season 5 cast additions
Zahn McClarnon will return as Joe Leaphorn, alongside Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee and Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito.
Paola Núñez and Martin Sensmeier have joined Season 5 as series regulars. Noel Fisher, Devin Sampson-Craig and John Patrick Jordan will appear in recurring roles, although AMC has shared limited information about their characters and involvement in the new mystery.
Dark Winds Season 5 already has a major unresolved murder, several new characters and important decisions ahead for its central trio. Until AMC announces a firm premiere date, viewers can watch the previous seasons on AMC+ and Netflix.
