The glitching video game avatars are escaping their digital jungle for one last chaotic adventure. Sony Pictures has just released the official trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the third and apparently final installment of the massively successful reboot series. The new footage shows a major flip in the script: instead of teenagers getting sucked into a dusty console, the dangerous world of Jumanji is bursting out into reality.
The classic video game heroes get stuck in demo mode
The newly released trailer opens with Spencer (Alex Wolff) and his friends hanging out at a local diner, only to watch Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) suddenly materialize right in front of them. He is quickly joined by the rest of his digital crew: Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon (Jack Black), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan).

However, things are not working properly. The avatars seem to be trapped in a malfunctioning “demo mode,” leading to strange behavior, like Johnson’s Bravestone suddenly speaking with a fluent Spanish accent. The real world quickly falls into chaos, with the trailer showcasing stampedes of oversized rhinos, ostriches, and reptiles destroying a town to the tune of “The Final Countdown.”
This premise—the game invading the real world—brings the franchise full circle, paying tribute to the original 1995 film starring the late Robin Williams.
What we know about the final chapter’s release
The movie is shaping up to be a major holiday release, though it recently saw a small delay to avoid a massive box office collision.
Here are the key details for the upcoming film:
- Release Date: The movie will hit theaters exclusively on December 25, 2026.
- Schedule Shift: It was originally set for December 11, but moved to Christmas Day to avoid clashing directly with Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, which both open on December 18.
- Returning Cast: Beyond the core four avatars, the film brings back Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain as the teenagers. Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, and Marin Hinkle also return.
- New Faces: Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes are joining the cast in undisclosed roles.
- The Creative Team: Jake Kasdan returns to direct, using a script he co-wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
Fans of the series can expect plenty of the body-swapping humor and over-the-top action that made the first two movies massive hits, earning over $1.7 billion combined. The final installment promises to wrap up the story while honoring the chaotic fun of the original board game adventure.
