Apple’s Simplified iPhone Lineup Is a Major Success: CIRP

Apple has completed a major overhaul of its iPhone strategy, and recent data shows the effort is paying off. By streamlining the available models, the tech giant is guiding more customers toward its newest and most premium devices. This shift represents a return to a simpler product lineup and an end to the confusing era of having up to ten different phones for sale at once.

Apple sees record demand for its latest flagship generation

According to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), Apple’s strategy to focus demand on the newest models is working. The company completely revamped its offerings with the launch of the iPhone 17 series in September 2025. This lineup included the base, Pro, Pro Max, and the highly anticipated iPhone Air, which replaced the older Plus model slot. A few months later, the iPhone 17e launched as the new entry-level option.

The research shows that during the nine months ending in June 2026, the four flagship iPhone 17 models accounted for an impressive 79% of all new sales. This is a massive jump compared to previous years. For example, during the same nine-month windows ending in June 2025 and 2024, the flagship models only captured 70% and 67% of total sales, respectively.

A streamlined store makes choices easier for phone buyers

The company now sells a much cleaner, easier-to-understand roster of devices. Currently, the only older models available as brand new purchases are the vintage 2024 iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. This is a sharp contrast to recent years when Apple kept a confusing mix of nearly a dozen different phones actively for sale.

CIRP noted that this strategic shift brings the company back closer to Steve Jobs’ original philosophy of simplicity. The introduction of the ‘e’ class device was viewed as a critical step in cleaning up the messy product tiers. By limiting older options, the tech brand successfully encouraged the vast majority of its customers to invest in the latest technology and premium features.
