Netflix has officially started production on This Summer Will Be Different, its upcoming romance series based on Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel. The first behind-the-scenes image shows lead stars Sophie Nélisse, Roby Attal, and Francesca Reale together on Prince Edward Island.
The 10-episode series will film in Toronto and across Prince Edward Island, bringing the novel’s beaches, red cliffs, coastal towns, and summer atmosphere to the screen. Netflix has not announced a release date, although filming beginning in August 2026 suggests the show will arrive sometime in 2027.

What is the Netflix series about?
This Summer Will Be Different follows Lucy, a young woman moving through her twenties while trying to understand her first serious love. The problem is that she has fallen for Felix, the younger brother of her best friend, Bridget.
Their attraction develops across several summers on Prince Edward Island. Lucy and Felix know their relationship could damage her friendship with Bridget, yet their feelings become harder to ignore whenever they return to the island.
Spoiler warning for the novel
The story begins when Lucy meets Felix during her first trip to Prince Edward Island. Their connection quickly becomes physical, but Lucy later discovers that he is Bridget’s brother.
Lucy and Felix agree to stay apart, although they repeatedly break that promise over the following years. The main timeline brings Lucy back to the island before Bridget’s wedding, forcing the pair to confront their history and decide whether their relationship has a future.
The Netflix version could change parts of the novel or expand supporting characters across its 10 episodes.

Sophie Nélisse will play Lucy, while Roby Attal stars as Felix and Francesca Reale plays Bridget. The wider cast includes Jordan Rodrigues as Miles Lam, Jude Wilson as Zach, Natalie Brown as Christine, James Tupper as Ken, Tom Barnett as Peter, and Celia Owen as Joy.
Karen Maine, Jasmin Mozaffari, and Fab Filippo will direct episodes. Fortune also serves as an executive producer alongside creators Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, Jennifer Kawaja, and Elise Cousineau.
