Apple’s newest Watches quietly drop handwashing support

Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 appear to have lost automatic handwashing detection. The feature remains part of watchOS 27, but Apple’s compatibility information does not list either of its newest watches as supported hardware.

Apple’s handwashing guide says the timer can start automatically when a compatible Apple Watch detects the motions and sounds of washing. The current support list includes older models, while Series 12 and Ultra 4 are absent. Apple has not said whether that omission is temporary or intentional.

The feature arrived with watchOS 7 in 2020. It uses motion and audio cues to begin a 20-second countdown, and it can remind users to wash after returning home. Handwashing records can also appear in the Health app, so the software category still exists even when the newest hardware cannot start a session automatically.

What owners can check

There is no setting that can add unsupported hardware to Apple’s list. Owners can open the Watch app on iPhone, choose Handwashing, and look for the timer control. If the option is missing on a Series 12 or Ultra 4, Apple has not published a workaround.

Apple could revise the support page or enable the feature later, but neither outcome has been announced. Manual 20-second timers remain available, although they are not the same as automatic detection or Health logging.
