Apple designed a shorter Apple Pencil for iPhone Duo but abandoned the accessory before mass production, according to a new report. The compact stylus was meant to sit along the foldable iPhone’s hinge, giving the phone a more portable companion than an iPad-size Pencil.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the smaller Pencil ran into technical problems. Apple has not described those problems publicly, so it is not clear whether they involved the accessory, magnetic attachment, charging, or the phone itself.
Apple instead announced that iPhone Duo will work with the existing USB-C Apple Pencil. Support will not be ready when the foldable ships on October 23. Apple says it will arrive later in 2026 through a software update, after compatibility testing is complete.

Why the change matters
The switch explains why Apple Pencil support is both official and delayed. Apple appears to have built stylus input into the Duo plan, but the late move to an existing accessory created more software and validation work. It also means buyers will carry a Pencil designed around the larger iPad rather than a model sized for a pocketable phone.

A smaller Pencil could still return in another form, but Apple has not announced one. For buyers, the only confirmed path is the USB-C Apple Pencil, with support due later this year rather than on day one.
The report also leaves important details unanswered. No price, battery specification, charging method, or prototype image has been published for the smaller accessory. Apple has not confirmed that it reached a finished industrial-design stage. Its final name is also unknown.
