Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 brings Ted back after three years and gives him a difficult choice between his quiet life in Kansas City and another coaching opportunity at AFC Richmond. The premiere, titled “Home,” explains what happened after Ted left England and prepares the story for the club’s new women’s team.
The episode begins with Ted working as an assistant manager at an expensive grocery store in Kansas City. He still helps people with his familiar advice, but his current job does not give him the same sense of purpose that coaching once provided.

Ted receives an offer from AFC Richmond
Spoiler warning: Major Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 spoilers follow.
Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins travel to Kansas City, where they tell Ted about AFC Richmond’s plan to create a women’s football team. Rebecca wants Ted to become its coach and build the same supportive culture that transformed Richmond’s men’s team.
Ted does not immediately accept the offer because he returned home to spend more time with his son, Henry. His relationship with Michelle has also improved, while Henry appears settled and happy in Kansas City. Ted worries that moving back to London would undo the progress his family has made.
The situation becomes more complicated when another women’s football club closes because it can no longer support the financial costs. Rebecca briefly questions whether Richmond can make its project successful, although Keeley remains confident about its future.
Why Ted decides to return to London
Ted visits his mother, Dottie, while she prepares to leave his childhood home. She quickly notices that Ted does not care about his grocery store job and encourages him to return to work that gives him a clear purpose.
His visit to a Kansas City Current match also reminds him of the energy and community surrounding football. Rebecca later leaves him a teabag with a note telling him to let the decision “steep,” giving Ted more time to consider the offer.
Ted eventually asks Michelle and Henry how they would feel about moving to London with him. Both support the idea, removing his biggest reason for rejecting Rebecca’s proposal.
The episode ends with Ted ready to return to AFC Richmond and coach its new women’s team. Season 3 showed Ted leaving Richmond to rebuild his family life, while Season 4 now brings his family into the next stage of his coaching journey.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 focuses more on Ted’s decision than football, but it sets up a major change for Richmond and introduces the central challenge of the season. What do you think about Ted returning to London, and can he turn the new women’s team into another Richmond success story? Let us know in the comments.
