Apple TV has picked up Ascension, a new psychological horror thriller from Alfonso Cuarón, with Caitríona Balfe set to star and executive produce the series. The project marks Cuarón’s second collaboration with Apple TV after Disclaimer, which premiered in 2024 with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Ascension takes inspiration from Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows Rose, a documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who begins investigating a mysterious 20th-century cult called the Church of Ascension. As she spends more time studying the group, Rose starts finding comfort in its teachings before uncovering something far darker beneath the surface.

What to know about Apple TV’s Ascension
The one-hour series will focus on psychological horror, family, guilt, and the choices people make when they believe someone they love is in danger. Caitríona Balfe will play Rose, marking her second Apple project ahead of her role in the upcoming Apple Original Film Tenzing.
Natalie Erika James and Christian White will serve as co-showrunners, while James will also direct the series. Alfonso Cuarón, Carlos Cuarón, James, and White are writing the project, with Apple Studios producing alongside Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj and Anonymous Content.
Ascension also continues Apple TV’s relationship with Anonymous Content, which is producing other upcoming Apple projects including Neuromancer and 12 12 12.
Apple TV has not announced a release date or episode count for Ascension yet, so viewers will have to wait for more production and casting details as the series moves forward.
