The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, Episode 5 puts Maggie and Negan’s fragile Manhattan community under fresh pressure as a food crisis turns into a much bigger fight over how the settlement should be governed.
Episode 5, titled “Imperialis,” aired on August 23, 2026, and follows the destruction caused by the earthquake in the previous episode. With supplies running dangerously low, Maggie, Negan, Dillard and Renata head out looking for a way to keep their people alive.

Spoilers ahead for Dead City Season 3 Episode 5
The episode begins with the community facing the consequences of the earthquake, which destroyed much of its remaining food supply. Maggie needs another solution quickly, while the growing shortage creates anger among people who have already spent months living under rationing.

The group eventually focuses on capturing walkers that can help keep the methane-powered electricity system operating. The dangerous mission succeeds and briefly gives the settlement something to celebrate. Maggie and Negan also continue working surprisingly well together, extending the uneasy partnership that became possible after Season 2 ended with them agreeing to move forward together.
That progress does not last.
Why does Negan kill Fabian?
Fabian has become increasingly frustrated with Maggie and the direction of the community. After the food shortage worsens, he steals supplies for his family. Renata catches him and forces him to return the food and apologize publicly.
His anger soon turns toward Maggie. Later, Fabian talks to Negan while carrying a gun and makes it clear that he sees Maggie as the source of the settlement’s problems. Negan initially listens, but the conversation changes when he realizes Fabian appears ready to act on his threats.
Negan attacks him, takes his gun and holds him at gunpoint. Renata arrives and orders Negan to stop, insisting that their community does not simply execute people.
Negan shoots Fabian anyway.
Renata immediately tells Negan that he is under arrest, but he refuses to surrender. He has no intention of returning to a cell, and their confrontation ends with Negan challenging her to come back with enough armed people to take him.
What does the Episode 5 ending mean?
Fabian’s death creates a serious problem for Maggie. Negan protected her from someone he believed was preparing to kill her, but he also ignored the rules that Maggie and Renata are trying to establish.
Season 3 began with Maggie and Negan attempting to create Manhattan’s first thriving post-apocalyptic community together. Now their biggest problem comes from inside that community, with Negan once again deciding that his own judgment matters more than its laws.
Episode 6, titled “Genesis,” arrives on August 30, so the fallout from Negan’s decision should become the immediate focus as Renata decides how far she is willing to go to enforce her authority.
