Lanterns Season 1, Episode 2 takes Hal Jordan and John Stewart deeper into the mystery surrounding Rushville, Nebraska, while finally revealing what the aliens in town were searching for. Titled “Trust Fall,” the episode also introduces Sinestro and raises a much bigger question about John’s unusual Green Lantern abilities.
The episode stays in 2016 after the premiere moved between 1996, 2016, and 2026. Hal and John spend much of the hour apart, allowing each of them to uncover a different piece of the same mystery before comparing what they know.

John Stewart discovers something unusual about his powers
Hal begins the episode by attempting to teach John how to fly, although his teaching methods remain frustratingly vague. John fails to leave the ground, but something much stranger happens when he creates a small green bird.
The construct continues to behave almost like a living creature, even as John’s ring loses its charge. Hal sends John to Coast City to retrieve his Green Lantern battery, turning what appears to be a routine errand into another part of his training.
John eventually encounters disguised aliens who explain why they came to Earth. They are searching for a Manhunter, one of the synthetic beings created by the Guardians before the Green Lantern Corps existed.
According to them, a Manhunter is hiding somewhere in Rushville, and John has only a limited amount of time to find it before the situation becomes far more dangerous. The revelation also connects the mystery to Abin Sur and suggests the Guardians have kept important parts of their history hidden.
Hal’s investigation leads him back to Sinestro
Meanwhile, Hal continues investigating Rushville and discovers unusual alien-detection equipment linked to William Macon. His search ends violently when Macon shoots him, leaving Hal injured and briefly hospitalized. Sheriff Kerry Kane remains caught in the middle as strange incidents continue piling up around the town.
Once Hal learns about the Manhunter threat, he goes looking for someone who knows more about the Guardians’ secrets.
That person is Sinestro.
The episode ends with Hal visiting his former mentor in prison. Sinestro appears less concerned about the Manhunter than Hal expects and instead turns the conversation toward John Stewart. His warning suggests John’s unexplained abilities have a history that Hal does not yet understand.
Episode 1 established the murder mystery and showed that Hal eventually dies in 2026, while Episode 2 expands the story into the Green Lantern Corps’ hidden past. With a Manhunter somewhere in Rushville and Sinestro suddenly interested in John, Episode 3 now has several major mysteries to follow.
