Shonali and Padma’s partner-swap plan falls apart because the two friends treat a fantasy as if they can control its emotional consequences. Their Khandala trip begins as a private scheme to escape sexless marriages, but it exposes mismatched desire, jealousy and a level of dissatisfaction neither woman has honestly faced with her husband.
The first story’s twist is that the intended pairings never become the real center of the weekend. Shonali pursues Padma’s husband Hemant, while Padma moves toward Shonali’s husband Debu. The plan therefore stops being a mutual experiment and becomes a collision between two marriages and a friendship that has depended on unspoken rules.

The plan begins with dissatisfaction, not freedom
Shonali and Padma are presented as close friends whose marriages have reached an impasse. Reviews describe them as women stuck in sexless domestic routines, with Shonali more adventurous and Padma initially more reserved. A K-drama gives them the idea of switching partners during a trip, and they arrange it without telling the men involved.
That secrecy is the first fault line. The women imagine that they can dictate the boundaries and preserve their friendship because they authored the plan. But the husbands are not props, and desire does not follow a rehearsal. Once the trip begins, each person’s private insecurity becomes harder to hide.
The intended matches reveal the wrong needs
Shonali makes a play for Hemant, but the connection does not deliver the transformation she expects. Padma and Debu, meanwhile, are the pair who genuinely click. That reversal is more painful than a simple failure because it makes Shonali feel excluded from a game she proposed and exposes how little either friend understood about the other’s loneliness.
Padma also cannot remain detached from what the arrangement means. Jealousy interrupts the original plan, and the weekend becomes a test of whether the women want physical novelty, emotional recognition or an exit from lives that no longer make sense to them.
The accident leaves every relationship altered
Hemant’s accident abruptly breaks the fantasy atmosphere. As the others deal with its fallout, the story makes clear that the trip cannot simply be reset. Padma and Hemant find a measure of intimacy after the shock, while Shonali’s final dance with hotel employee David points toward a choice that is deliberately left implied rather than confirmed.
The scheme falls apart because it was never a solution to the real problem. Shonali and Padma wanted control over desire without confronting the honesty their marriages and friendship required.
