John Stewart digs up Hal Jordan’s grave because the ring buried with him contains the only witness who may still answer for Rushville. Episode 6 ends with John removing the ring, using its last five percent of power and summoning a projection of Hal that reacts to the body in the coffin.
The grave scene completes a difficult return to the town John tried to leave behind. Ten years after the disaster, he has built a security business with his brother Marcus, rejected the Green Lantern identity and remained furious that Hal’s prison sentence never repaired the damage done to Rushville.

John returns to a changed Rushville
The episode opens in 2026 with John pitching underground stadium shelters to Midway City officials. His mother, Bernadette, calls and claims that Hal wants to apologize after serving ten years in prison. John knows better than to trust the situation, yet he drives to Rushville because the unfinished argument still controls part of his life.
Hal offers no apology. He insists that serving his sentence settled the debt, while John argues that punishment did not restore the lives destroyed in the attack. Their confrontation makes clear that the time jump changed their circumstances without resolving the central moral conflict between them.
Hal’s funeral puts the ring within reach
Hal’s death turns the argument into a murder investigation before John receives the answers he came to demand. Guy Gardner arrives as Earth’s active Green Lantern and initially refuses to help with the case. John instead asks him to recover Hal’s decommissioned ring so Hal can be buried in his uniform.
The funeral is painfully small. Kerry Kane attends, and Carol Ferris arrives with a eulogy Hal wrote years earlier, when he apparently imagined a much larger farewell. John reads it, but the scene underlines how completely Hal’s public identity and personal relationships collapsed after Rushville.
The grave opens a new investigation
After dark, John returns alone and opens the grave. He loses an important business call while digging, a choice that shows how the old case is already consuming the future he built with Marcus. Once he puts on the ring, the Halogram appears and recognizes that something has gone terribly wrong.
Episode 6 therefore leaves John with a new partner who is also the image of the man he resents. The projection may know what Hal hid, who wanted him dead and why the ring still carried a copy of him. What should John ask the Halogram first? Share your answer in the comments.
