Fans of the animated comedy Futurama have a lot of new content to look forward to over the next few years. In a recent update about the future of the beloved sci-fi series, showrunner David X. Cohen and executive producer Claudia Katz revealed that the Planet Express crew is getting three massive, extended specials on Hulu, with the first big installment dropping in 2027.
The show tries out the longer format of other popular comedies
The decision to make oversized episodes marks a fresh direction for the long-running space comedy. Instead of sticking strictly to standard half-hour releases, the production team is branching out into much longer storytelling.
This format shift closely follows what other classic animated shows are doing on the streaming platform. Both The Simpsons and Family Guy recently tested the waters with their own extended Hulu events. These longer runtimes allow writers to explore bigger plots that just will not fit into a normal television time slot. Now, the team behind Fry, Leela, and Bender gets that same extra time to play around in their futuristic universe.

A holiday-themed adventure kicks off the new releases next year
The first of these three huge specials is currently in production and will hit screens sometime in 2027. According to the creators, this initial super-sized episode will feature a holiday theme, bringing some festive chaos to New New York.
While the plot details for the second and third specials remain a secret, they are expected to follow shortly after the first one wraps up. In the meantime, the show recently rolled out its fourteenth season in August, keeping viewers fed with fresh weekly adventures. The ongoing series is still animated by Rough Draft Studios, so the classic visual style will remain intact as the writers stretch their ideas into bigger movie events.
