The primary communication app on many Android phones is getting some fresh updates. Recent code discoveries reveal that Google is planning major visual and practical changes for the pinned chats section inside its popular messaging application. These unreleased updates will bring animated elements, new media previews, and group selection tools to the interface. The goal is to make texting much easier for daily users who keep their favorite contacts locked at the top of their screen.
The app adds animated typing indicators for your friends
Right now, when someone at the top of your inbox is writing a reply, the screen simply displays the word “typing”. This text-based alert inside the Messages layout is quite basic. In upcoming versions, the software will replace that plain text with a moving animation.
Instead of just words, the contact’s profile picture will animate to show they are active. This change borrows from modern design styles, giving the chat list a more active and playful look.

You can preview photos and videos directly in the feed
Another big adjustment changes how you see incoming media. Currently, if a pinned friend sends a photo or a video, the chat list only shows a generic label saying “Image” or “Video”. This means you have to open the conversation to see what they sent.
The new design fixes this by showing a small thumbnail of the image right in the main menu. For videos, you will see a frame from the clip along with a tiny play button. Audio files get a waveform icon, while GIFs display an animated preview. The app will also include specific icons for PDFs and contact cards, making it much easier to know what kind of file is waiting for you.
Users gain the ability to manage multiple pins at once
Managing your favorite conversations is also getting easier. The current setup forces you to pin or unpin contacts one by one. If you select multiple conversations at the same time, the pin icon simply vanishes from the menu bar.
Future updates will let you select several threads and pin them all simultaneously. You can also do the reverse and unpin a group of chats with a single tap. This group action saves time and helps keep your inbox organized. When these hidden features finally roll out to the public, setting up your top conversations will be much faster and look far better.
