Spoilers for Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 follow. Asta and Liebe do unlock Devil Union during their fight with Nacht, but only for an instant. Their anti-magic erases Nacht’s spell and proves that their equal partnership can produce the form. The ending does not show Asta mastering it or carrying it into the Spade Kingdom raid.

That distinction is the point of “The Battle Begins.” Asta and Liebe have the right bond, but they still lack coordination. While the Magic Knights launch the rescue of Yami and William, the two brothers remain behind with Nacht to turn a brief breakthrough into a power Asta can control.

Asta and Liebe reach Union for one decisive moment

Nacht spends the training fight showing why Asta’s familiar Black form is not the same as Devil Union. Asta can borrow Liebe’s anti-magic, but Nacht’s own Devil Union gives him a more complete transformation and lets him dominate the battlefield with shadow magic.

The breakthrough comes when Asta stops treating the exercise as a problem he must solve alone. He and Liebe align their intent, enter Union for a flash and cut through Nacht’s Dark Prison Hunting Ground. It is enough to surprise their teacher and confirm that the form is real. It is not enough to finish their training.

The failed training explains why Asta misses the raid

The episode keeps Asta away from the first wave of the Spade Kingdom operation because he cannot summon the transformation reliably. Nacht originally gives him three days, but the raid begins while that work is unfinished. Sending Asta into enemy territory with a power that appears for only a second would turn the rescue into a gamble.

That delay also creates two parallel battles. Yuno and the captains confront the Dark Triad, while Asta and Liebe fight for the control they will need to join them. The premiere therefore gives Asta a victory without pretending he is ready for the war’s strongest enemies.

The ending opens the Spade Kingdom war

Elsewhere, Morris continues preparing the ritual that will open the gates to the underworld. The official episode synopsis places that threat beside the Magic Knights’ invasion, making the final movement a race against the ritual rather than a simple rescue mission.

So the answer is yes, with an important limit: Asta and Liebe have accessed Devil Union, but they have not mastered its timing or duration. Their next step is learning to reproduce the moment before the Spade Kingdom battle becomes impossible to contain. Do you think Asta will reach the battlefield in time?
