Can Keyboard Covers and Screen Protectors Damage a MacBook Display?

A keyboard cover or thick camera cover can damage a MacBook display if it remains in place when the lid is closed. Apple designs the gap between the keyboard and screen to very tight tolerances, leaving little room for accessories between the two surfaces.

Apple’s Mac notebook safety guidance tells owners to remove keyboard covers, palm-rest covers and camera covers before closing the display. The company separately warns that a camera cover thicker than an average sheet of printer paper can crack or mark the screen.

The concern applies across MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, including current machines such as the M5 MacBook Air. Pressure from an accessory can transfer directly to the glass when the lid is carried in a tight bag or another object presses against it.

Which accessories are safer

A removable keyboard cover can still be useful around dust or spills while the Mac is open, but it should come off before the lid closes. Avoid leaving paper, cards, webcam shutters or other objects on the keyboard because even a thin item can concentrate pressure in one spot.

Apple does not publish a blanket warning against a professionally fitted film applied directly to the display, although any protector can change reflections, coating behavior and lid clearance. Buyers should follow the protector maker’s model-specific instructions and avoid rigid glass products unless Apple explicitly supports them.

Hard-shell cases attach outside the computer and create a different risk profile. A properly fitted case should not sit between the keyboard and display, but extra weight, blocked vents, poor hinge movement or clips pressing on the display assembly are reasons to remove an ill-fitting model.

The safest setup is a padded sleeve for transport and no loose accessory between the screen and keyboard. If a cover leaves pressure marks, prevents the lid from closing naturally or changes hinge resistance, stop using it before permanent damage develops.
