Most MacBook Pro buyers should start with 24GB of unified memory, while 48GB is the safer target for demanding video work, large development projects and regular use of local AI models. Configurations above that level make sense when a known workload already exceeds 48GB, not simply because more memory is available.
Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications show that memory choices depend on the chip, with Pro and Max configurations opening higher capacities than the standard M5. Because the CPU and GPU share unified memory, graphics, applications and an AI model all compete for the same pool.
Apple Intelligence does not by itself require a top memory configuration. Apple lists separate device and storage requirements for its on-device intelligence features, while third-party models vary widely and may require far more memory depending on their parameter count and precision.

Match memory to the work
Choose 24GB for general professional work, large photo libraries, routine coding and occasional 4K editing. This capacity leaves more room than the entry configuration for several demanding apps, but users should still close memory-heavy tools before loading a large local model.
Choose 48GB for complex video timelines, several creative applications used together, virtual machines or medium-sized AI models that need sustained memory headroom. This is often the practical balance for professionals because it improves flexibility without paying for capacity that may remain unused.
Consider 64GB or more only after measuring current memory pressure or checking the requirements of a specific model, data set or rendering workflow. Activity Monitor can show whether an existing Mac regularly swaps to storage, although a small amount of swap does not automatically mean the computer needs replacement.
Memory cannot be upgraded after purchase, so leave room for the work you expect to add during the Mac’s useful life. Storage is a separate decision, and large AI model files can consume substantial disk space even when the model also fits comfortably in memory. Current M5 Pro MacBook Pro offers can make a higher-memory configuration easier to justify when the discount applies to the model you need.
