However, the trip becomes uncomfortable when Alex discovers that her ex-husband Lorcan has arrived with his girlfriend Theresa, while Patrick is accompanied by Cara.
Following her recent breakup with Michael, Alex finds herself surrounded by couples and sharing accommodation with her son. She initially considers leaving, but Ruari encourages her to relax and enjoy the holiday.
Their relationship becomes one of the episode’s strongest elements. During a game of Heads Up, Alex and Ruari demonstrate how well they understand each other, leaving Lorcan visibly frustrated.
Ruari Opens Up to Patrick About His Father
Lorcan’s jealousy grows as he watches Ruari connect with Alex and Patrick. Rather than acknowledging his distant relationship with his son, he accuses Alex of turning Ruari against him.
During a night out, Ruari admits to Patrick that he worries about becoming like his father. Patrick reassures him and offers advice about relationships.
Things become complicated when Ruari takes MDMA given to him by a local woman. Patrick eventually recognizes that something is wrong and helps him return safely.
The incident highlights Patrick’s protective attitude toward Ruari, particularly when compared with Lorcan’s attempts to impress everyone around him.
Does Frank Die in Youth Episode 5?
The anniversary celebrations take a serious turn when Frank suffers a heart attack, forcing the group to seek medical attention.
Frank survives the heart attack, although the emergency interrupts the holiday and leaves everyone shaken.
The incident also brings the uncertainty surrounding Sam and Frank’s marriage into sharper focus. Their relationship has already shown signs of tension, particularly through Sam’s insecurity and Frank’s frustration with her constant messages.
The medical emergency gives the episode a more serious ending after its earlier comedic moments.
Youth Episode 5 Ending Explained: Does Patrick Still Love Alex?
The episode’s biggest revelation comes when Patrick admits that he still misses Alex.
Throughout the holiday, Patrick shows little interest in spending time with Cara. He even ignores her messages to stay awake with Alex and watch the sunrise.
Alex also discovers that Cara invited herself on the trip, suggesting Patrick never intended to bring her.
After Frank’s heart attack, Patrick becomes more open about his feelings. He tells Alex that missing her now causes him genuine emotional pain, prompting a pleased reaction from her.
Patrick’s confession strongly suggests that he wants another chance with Alex, although neither makes a firm commitment before the episode ends.
Their relationship remains complicated, but Patrick’s growing closeness with Ruari gives Alex another reason to reconsider their future.
The ending sets up an important question for Episode 6: whether Alex will finally act on her feelings or continue keeping Patrick at a distance.
