iPhone Duo’s under-display FaceTime camera tops out at 1080p, the outer at 4K

iPhone Duo has two front-facing cameras, and Apple’s spec sheet shows they are far from equal: the 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display records 4K Dolby Vision video, while the new under-display FaceTime camera on the inner display records 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. Apple’s foldable starts at $1,999 for 256GB and is available starting October 23, 2026, after pre-orders opened on October 16.

That split decides which camera you should reach for. For selfies and recorded video, close the phone. For calls with the phone open or propped up, the inner camera is built for the job.

Two front cameras with two jobs

Apple describes the front setup in its iPhone Duo press release. The Center Stage front camera “can automatically take photos and videos in any orientation, so users don’t have to rotate iPhone for landscape selfies.” The second camera sits underneath the inner display and “helps users connect with friends and family, whether iPhone Duo is held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls.”

On the product page, Apple says “the under-display FaceTime camera is hidden until you need it,” and the result is what Apple calls “an uninterrupted viewing surface” on the 7.6-inch inner display.

What the outer camera can do

The 12MP outer camera has the fuller feature set of the two. Its spec list includes Retina Flash, Smart Take, Photographic Styles 3, Center Stage for photos, Dual Capture, Night mode and next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control.

Video tops out at 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, with Cinematic mode up to 4K Dolby Vision at 30 fps and slo-mo at 1080p at 120 fps. Apple also lists ultra-stabilized video and Center Stage for video calls.

For comparison, iPhone 18 Pro uses an 18MP Center Stage front camera with an Æ’/1.9 aperture, so Duo owners give up some front-camera resolution.

What the inner camera can do

The under-display FaceTime camera has a shorter feature list. Apple’s specs show an Æ’/1.8 aperture, Edge Light for video calls, Center Stage for video calls, tap to zoom and rotate, ultra-stabilized video, Animoji and Memoji in FaceTime, and 1080p video recording at 30 or 60 fps. QuickTake video is also limited to 1080p at 30 fps and 60 fps.

Apple’s FAQ sums it up plainly: iPhone Duo “also has an under-display FaceTime camera for 1080p video.” That matches FaceTime itself, which Apple lists as “FaceTime HD (1080p) video calling over 5G or Wi-Fi.”

In practice, the inner camera is a call camera. Apple’s product page says “iPhone Duo can stand on its own, so you can take FaceTime calls without holding up your phone.”

Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Smart Take use the outer screen

The most interesting camera features on iPhone Duo do not involve the front cameras at all. They use the outer display while you shoot with the rear cameras. Apple’s FAQ says iPhone Duo “is the only iPhone with certain camera features including Smart Take for capturing hands-free photos automatically, Duo Preview for live previews on the outer display, and Kid Cue with playful animations to capture kids’ attention.”

  • Duo Preview: “The outer display lets whoever you’re photographing see a live preview of the shot, so they can get their pose and framing just right.” Apple lists it for both photos and video.
  • Kid Cue: “Playful animations on the outer display naturally draw their eyes to the lens.” Apple says it “grabs your child’s attention.”
  • Smart Take: “iPhone Duo can detect when everyone is ready and takes the picture. So you don’t have to race against a timer to get in the shot.” It appears in the spec list for both the rear system and the outer front camera.
  • Duo FaceTime: “Lets nearby friends join the call on the outer display. No more crowding around or passing the phone.”

The rear cameras in short

iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system: a 48MP Fusion Main camera at 26 mm and ƒ/1.6 with sensor-shift optical image stabilization, plus a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm, ƒ/2.2 and a 120° field of view. The main camera also enables a 12MP optical-quality 2x Telephoto at 52 mm, and digital zoom goes up to 10x.

There is no dedicated telephoto lens. Apple’s FAQ says iPhone Duo has “up to 2x optical-quality zoom,” while iPhone 18 Pro adds a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with “up to 8x optical-quality zoom.”

On video, the Fusion Main camera records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps, and slo-mo reaches 1080p at up to 240 fps.

Which camera to use

  • Selfies and selfie video: close the phone and use the 12MP outer camera, which records up to 4K at 60 fps.
  • Group photos without a timer: Smart Take takes the picture when it detects everyone is ready.
  • Photos of kids: Kid Cue plays animations on the outer display to draw their eyes to the lens.
  • Someone posing for you: Duo Preview shows them the shot on the outer display.
  • FaceTime with the phone open or standing: the under-display camera, at 1080p.
