iPhone Duo will support the $79 Apple Pencil (USB-C) later this year

iPhone Duo will work with Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple says, with support “Coming later this year.” The $79 stylus is the only Apple Pencil Apple names for the foldable, which starts at $1,999 and goes on sale October 23, 2026.

Apple confirms it in the FAQ on its iPhone Duo product page. Asked “Does iPhone Duo work with Apple Pencil or a stylus?”, Apple answers: “Yes. iPhone Duo will work with Apple Pencil (USB‑C). Coming later this year.”

Where Apple lists Pencil support

The FAQ is not the only place. Apple’s iPhone Duo spec page lists “Supports Apple Pencil (USB-C)” in the section for both displays, with a footnote that reads “Coming later this year.” The same line and footnote appear on Apple’s iPhone comparison page and on the UK spec page.

Apple’s Apple Pencil (USB-C) store page backs this up. Its compatibility section has an “iPhone Models” heading with one entry, iPhone Duo, above the list of supported iPad models. That entry carries the same “Coming later this year” footnote.

That means support is listed for the 7.6-inch inner display and the 5.4-inch outer display, not just the larger screen. The inner display has a 1878-by-2670-pixel resolution at 430 ppi and a nano-texture finish, according to Apple’s spec page.

What Apple Pencil (USB-C) does

Apple describes Apple Pencil (USB-C) as “perfect for taking notes, sketching, marking up documents, journaling, and more.” The store page says it “delivers pixel‑perfect precision, low latency, and tilt sensitivity.”

Here are the basics from Apple’s store listing:

SpecApple Pencil (USB-C)
U.S. price$79.00
Diameter0.35 inch (8.9 mm)
Length6.10 inches (155 mm)
Weight0.72 ounce (20.5 grams)
ConnectionsBluetooth, USB-C

On iPad, Apple says it “pairs and charges via a USB-C Charge Cable” and “magnetically attaches to the side of iPad for storage.”

What it lacks compared with Apple Pencil Pro

Apple Pencil (USB-C) does less than Apple Pencil Pro, and Apple’s own comparison chart is clear about the gaps. Apple marks these features as “Not compatible with Apple Pencil (USB-C)”:

  • Pressure sensitivity
  • Wireless pairing and charging
  • Double-tap to change tools
  • Barrel roll
  • Squeeze
  • Haptic feedback

The features it does share with Apple Pencil Pro on Apple’s chart are pixel-perfect precision, low latency, tilt sensitivity, magnetic attachment and Apple Pencil hover.

Hover needs a note of caution. Apple’s footnote says “Apple Pencil hover works with iPad Pro (M4 and M5), iPad Pro 11‑inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (6th generation), iPad Air (M2, M3, and M4), and iPad mini (A17 Pro).” iPhone Duo is not on that list.

Apple Pencil Pro is also not listed for iPhone Duo. Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility support document names only iPad models for Apple Pencil Pro, and the iPhone Duo FAQ names only Apple Pencil (USB-C).

What Apple has not detailed

Apple has not said which software update brings Pencil support to iPhone Duo, or how pairing, charging and storage will work on a phone rather than an iPad. For now, the only firm timing is “later this year.”

Should you buy one now

If you already own an Apple Pencil (USB-C) for a supported iPad, Apple’s listing suggests the same stylus will work with iPhone Duo once support arrives. Apple’s FAQ names only that model, so owners of other Apple Pencil versions should not plan around theirs.

If you do not own one, there is no rush. Apple sells Apple Pencil (USB-C) for $79.00 on its U.S. store, and Apple lists iPhone Duo support as “Coming later this year.” Waiting until Apple turns on support lets you see how it works on the phone before you spend the money.
