How to set up HomePod mini 2: an iPhone or iPad on the latest iOS, not a Mac

HomePod mini 2 arrives October 30 at $149 (U.S.), and Apple says you will need an iPhone or iPad to get it running. “You can’t set up HomePod with a Mac,” Apple’s support guide states, and the device must be updated to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS first.

The setup itself is short. Here is what to have ready, the steps Apple lists, and what to do if the setup card never appears.

What you need before you start

Apple’s HomePod mini 2 tech specs list two system requirements: an “iPhone or iPad with the latest iOS or iPadOS” and “Wi-Fi internet access.” That is a change in wording from the original HomePod mini spec sheet, which named specific models, starting with iPhone SE and iPhone 6s or later on the phone side.

HomePod mini 2 supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), which Apple says is available in countries and regions where supported. Apple’s guide also notes that HomePod can connect to many campus or business 802.1X Wi-Fi networks.

What is in the box

Apple’s buy page lists three items: HomePod mini 2, a 20W USB-C Power Adapter and documentation. The spec page adds that “The 20W power adapter supplies 9V/2.22A required by HomePod mini 2,” and it works on line voltage from 100V to 240V.

Step by step: setting up HomePod mini 2

Apple’s guide, “Set up HomePod or HomePod mini,” covers both generations. These are the steps:

  • Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, and connect it to the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to use.
  • Place HomePod mini 2 on a solid surface with at least 6 inches of space around it, then plug it into power.
  • Wait for a chime and a pulsing white light on top of the speaker.
  • Unlock your iPhone or iPad and hold it next to HomePod mini 2. Tap Set Up when it appears on screen.
  • When asked, center HomePod mini 2 in the viewfinder on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to choose your settings.
  • Wait for setup to finish, then tap Done.

Apple says HomePod continues configuration in the Home app after setup, and “Configuration times may vary.” You can play audio using Siri on HomePod during that time. Settings you skip during setup can be changed later in the Home app.

If the camera step or setup card fails

Two fallbacks are built in. If the setup screen does not appear when you hold your device near the speaker, Apple says to try locking and then unlocking your device.

If you cannot use your camera for the viewfinder step, tap Enter Passcode Manually. Siri will then respond with a four-digit passcode for you to enter on your iPhone or iPad.

Ultra Wideband and the iPhone you use

HomePod mini 2 has an Ultra Wideband chip for device proximity. Apple’s footnote says this “Requires a U1‑equipped iPhone running the latest operating system software” and that “Ultra Wideband availability varies by region.”

Where your Mac fits

The Mac is left out of setup, but not out of use. Apple’s HomePod mini 2 press release says the new HomePod mini “can serve as a speaker for Mac,” and its footnote says the feature is supported on all Mac computers with Wi-Fi 6E or later. We have the list of Macs that qualify.

That means the order of operations for a desk setup is simple: set up the speaker from your iPhone or iPad first, then use it with the Mac.

Features that need more than basic setup

A few HomePod mini 2 features depend on other conditions Apple lists in its footnotes:

  • Siri AI is coming to HomePod mini 2 in a future software update. It requires the owner of the home in the Home app to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software, with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language.
  • Sound Recognition for smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds requires the updated Home architecture, a separate update in the Home app, and all Apple devices that access the home must be on the latest software.
  • Creating a stereo pair requires two of the same model and generation, such as two HomePod mini 2 speakers.
  • Home theater surround sound requires four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers in matching pairs, paired with Apple TV 4K (4th generation).

Apple sells HomePod mini 2 in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. It is compatible with HomePod software 27.2.
