Apple’s Product Environmental Reports put the base Mac Studio, with M5 Max, 36GB memory and 512GB storage, at 314 kg of gross greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e). The base Mac mini, with M6, 16GB memory and 256GB storage, comes in at 30 kg, and the largest single line separating them is customer product use.

Both reports carry a “date introduced” of August 25, 2026, and cover U.S. configurations with packaging and in-box accessories. If you leave a desktop running all day, this is the part of the report that concerns you.

| Phase | Mac mini (M6) | Mac Studio (M5 Max) |
|---|---|---|
| Production | 16 kg | 125 kg |
| Non-electricity (e.g., materials and process) | 16 kg | 48 kg |
| Electricity | 0 kg | 77 kg |
| Infrastructure for renewable energy generation | 6 kg | 2 kg |
| Transportation | 7 kg | 44 kg |
| Customer product use | 0 kg | 142 kg |
| End-of-life processing | under 1 kg | 1 kg |
| Total | 30 kg | 314 kg |
Apple rounds each line, so the rows do not always add up exactly to the printed total.
Customer use alone, at 142 kg, is larger than the Mac Studio’s entire production figure of 125 kg. On Mac mini the same line reads 0.

Why Mac mini shows zero for use
The zero is not a claim that Mac mini draws no power. The Mac mini report says 100 percent renewable electricity “is sourced to match both manufacturing and customer use,” and its footnotes spell it out:
- “We use a mix of supplier and Apple renewable energy projects when sourcing our manufacturing electricity.”
- “Apple is matching 100 percent of expected electricity consumption for product use with renewable electricity.”
The Mac Studio report makes no such matching claim. It says 40 percent of manufacturing electricity for Mac Studio was sourced from renewable energy, and it counts both manufacturing electricity (77 kg) and customer use (142 kg) in the total. That accounting difference, more than the hardware alone, is why the gap is so wide.
How Apple models use on a Mac
Apple’s reports define the use phase as four years of use time for Mac, with total energy use based on use patterns of historically similar products. Apple says those patterns draw on sources including field telemetry from users who opt in to sharing device analytics, and that geographic differences in power grid mix are accounted for at a regional level.
The other three phases are defined the same way in both reports:
- Production: the extraction, processing and transportation of raw materials, plus the manufacture, transport and assembly of all parts and product packaging.
- Transport: ground, air and sea transportation of the finished product and its packaging from the manufacturing site to regional hubs and customers.
- End-of-life processing: transportation from collection hubs to recycling centers and the energy used in mechanical separation and shredding of parts.
Transport is the other notable gap: 44 kg for Mac Studio against 7 kg for Mac mini.
Power draw at idle
Both reports publish power consumption measured under ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for Computers. At 115V:
| Mode | Mac mini | Mac Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Off | 0.19W | 0.21W |
| Sleep | 0.7W | 1.4W |
| Idle, display on | 3.0W | 5.7W |
| Power adapter efficiency | 93.2% | 93.8% |
Apple says Mac mini uses 70 percent less energy than the ENERGY STAR requirement, and Mac Studio uses 60 percent less. We have covered how quiet the two run at idle in our look at Apple’s acoustic figures.
Higher configurations
Each report also lists a step-up configuration:
| Configuration | Gross GHG emissions (CO2e) |
|---|---|
| Mac mini, M6 with 16GB memory, 256GB storage | 30 kg |
| Mac mini, M5 Pro with 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 512GB storage | 41 kg |
| Mac Studio, M5 Max with 32-core GPU, 36GB memory, 512GB storage | 314 kg |
| Mac Studio, M5 Ultra with 64-core GPU, 96GB memory, 1TB storage | 449 kg |
The M5 Ultra Mac Studio adds 135 kg over the M5 Max model. Apple does not publish a phase breakdown for the higher configurations.
Recycled content
Apple lists 50 percent recycled content in Mac mini and 35 percent in Mac Studio. Mac mini uses 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and thermal module stage, and Apple says a high-precision forging process cuts the aluminum used to make the enclosure by 85 percent compared to Mac mini (2023). Mac Studio uses 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and multiple thermal module components, and ships in 100 percent fiber-based packaging.
What it means for your desk
If you need Mac Studio’s M5 Max or M5 Ultra for the work you do, the hardware choice is made for you. What the reports show is that, on Apple’s own accounting, most of a Mac Studio’s footprint is not locked in at the factory. The 142 kg is a modeled average over four years, so your own hours at the desk, sleep settings and local grid decide how your real figure compares.
Apple explains its approach in the Mac Studio Product Environmental Report.
