Picking the M5 Max over the M5 Pro in the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display adds $1,600 to the starting price. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 with M5 Pro and $4,499 with M5 Max, according to Apple’s announcement. On the 16-inch model the gap shrinks to $1,400, from $3,399 to $4,799. Pre-orders open today, and the first machines reach customers and Apple Stores on Friday, November 6.
The M5 Max costs $1,600 more on the 14-inch model and $1,400 more on the 16-inch
Here are Apple’s US starting prices, with education pricing in brackets:
- 14-inch with M5 Pro: $2,899 ($2,749)
- 14-inch with M5 Max: $4,499 ($4,199)
- 16-inch with M5 Pro: $3,399 ($3,199)
- 16-inch with M5 Max: $4,799 ($4,499)
Part of that gap isn’t the chip at all. Apple’s tech specs page shows M5 Pro models starting with 24GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD. Every M5 Max model starts with at least 36GB and 2TB. So the Max price already bundles more memory and double the storage, and you can’t buy a Max with less.

The 14-inch Max also comes with a 96W adapter in the box. The entry 15-core M5 Pro ships with the 70W adapter, while the 18-core M5 Pro gets the 96W one. Every 16-inch model ships with 140W.
Apple’s spec sheet lists two M5 Pro chips and two M5 Max chips with very different GPUs
You don’t choose between two chips. You choose between four. Apple lists them like this:
- M5 Pro with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, 24GB or 48GB of memory, 307GB/s of memory bandwidth. 14-inch only.
- M5 Pro with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, 24GB, 48GB or 64GB of memory, 307GB/s.
- M5 Max with an 18-core CPU and 32-core GPU, 36GB of memory, 460GB/s.
- M5 Max with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB of memory, 614GB/s.
The 15-core CPU splits into 5 super cores and 10 performance cores. The 18-core CPU has 6 super cores and 12 performance cores. So once you step up to the 18-core M5 Pro, you have the same CPU core count as the Max. The Max pulls ahead on GPU cores, memory bandwidth and the memory ceiling.
Both chips share the same GPU architecture, according to Apple. Each GPU core has a Neural Accelerator, and both chips get the enhanced shader core design, the third-generation ray tracing engine and Dynamic Caching.
Memory up to 128GB is the M5 Max feature that changes what you can run locally
The M5 Pro tops out at 64GB of unified memory. The M5 Max goes to 128GB, but only with the 40-core GPU. The 32-core Max is fixed at 36GB, which is less than the most you can put in an M5 Pro.
Apple says the M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters on device. That claim depends on memory, so it applies to the 128GB configuration, not the 36GB one. Apple pitches the M5 Max at 3D VFX artists, AI developers and film composers. It pitches the M5 Pro at scientists, engineers, developers and creative pros, citing code compilation, AI tasks, DNA sequencing and editing multiple streams of 8K ProRes.
Storage follows the same split. M5 Pro models go to 1TB, 2TB or 4TB. M5 Max models start at 2TB and go to 4TB, 8TB or 16TB. If you need more than 4TB inside the laptop, you need the Max.
The M5 Max drives four external displays while the M5 Pro handles three
The M5 Pro supports up to three external displays. The M5 Max supports up to four. Both also run the built-in PROLED XDR display at full resolution at the same time. Unless your desk already has four monitors, this probably won’t decide it for you.
You give up a little battery life and weight when you choose the M5 Max
Apple’s battery figures favour the M5 Pro. On the 14-inch model, the M5 Pro is rated for up to 22 hours of video streaming and 14 hours of wireless web. The M5 Max drops to 20 and 13 hours. On the 16-inch model, the M5 Pro reaches 24 hours of video and 17 hours of web, against 22 and 16 hours for the Max. Apple’s own tests were run in September 2026, and results vary by use and configuration.
Weight barely moves. The 14-inch weighs 3.0 lb with M5 Pro and 3.1 lb with M5 Max. The 16-inch weighs 4.0 lb with M5 Pro and 4.1 lb with M5 Max.
Most buyers should stop at the 18-core M5 Pro and only AI and 3D work justifies the Max
The 18-core M5 Pro gives you the full 18-core CPU, up to 64GB of memory and three external displays. For software development, photo work and most video editing, that’s the sweet spot. Apple itself lists multistream 8K ProRes editing as M5 Pro territory.
Buy the M5 Max if you run local language models, render heavy 3D scenes or need more than 4TB of internal storage. If so, skip the 32-core version and go straight to the 40-core chip. Its 128GB ceiling and 614GB/s of bandwidth are the real reasons to pay $1,600 more. The 32-core Max, stuck at 36GB, is hard to justify over a well-specced M5 Pro.
Apple hasn’t published prices for individual memory, storage or chip upgrades in its newsroom post. We’ll update this piece once the online store shows them.
