Six months later, nurse Karl receives a transfer to the hospital’s restricted basement unit, where Jurek remains under strict supervision.
Karl discovers that Jurek’s medication contains a powerful sedative, allowing hospital staff to search his cell while he remains unconscious.
However, Jurek unexpectedly wakes and convinces Karl to deliver a secret message to his lawyer, beginning another manipulation from inside the facility.
Michael Frost Returns After Three Years
Meanwhile, a young boy named Michael Frost appears near Butler Bridge in Fairhaven, Pennsylvania, after disappearing alongside his sister, Felicia, three years earlier.
Michael suffers from severe malnutrition, dehydration, and temporary blindness after spending years in darkness. However, Felicia remains missing.
Police Chief Ellison contacts the FBI and informs retired detective Jonah Lynn, who originally investigated the siblings’ disappearance.
Jonah visits Michael and his mother, Ida, who remains angry that he previously failed to find her children.
Despite leaving the police force, Jonah has continued studying the case privately, keeping an extensive collection of evidence at home.
Why Does Jonah Suspect Jurek Walter?
FBI Special Agent Alexandra Quinn initially questions Jonah’s involvement, but he identifies clues suggesting Michael was held near an abandoned mine.
Jonah and officer Nathan investigate the location and discover evidence that Michael had been kept there.
More importantly, Nathan finds an empty vial of sevoflurane, an anesthetic previously associated with Jurek Walter’s victims.
The discovery strengthens Jonah’s suspicion that Jurek orchestrated the kidnapping despite being imprisoned.
It also suggests that someone outside the hospital has been helping him, since Jurek cannot personally carry out the crimes.
Nocturne Episode 1 Ending Explained
The episode ends with Jonah and Quinn confronting Jurek at Riverside Psychiatric Hospital.
Jurek claims he was wrongly convicted and accuses Jonah of lying during his original trial. He offers to help locate Felicia, but demands that Jonah admit his alleged wrongdoing.
Jonah believes Jurek wants to undermine his conviction, although the killer’s knowledge of the investigation suggests he remains involved.
Meanwhile, Quinn brings Jonah into the investigation, and FBI agent Saga Bauer prepares to go undercover at Riverside.
The ending establishes two connected mysteries: Felicia’s whereabouts and Jurek’s ability to influence people despite his imprisonment.
Karl’s secret communication with Jurek also suggests that the killer has already established another way to operate outside his cell.
As Ready Steady Cut’s Episode 1 analysis discusses, Jurek’s psychological manipulation becomes central to the investigation.
Based on Lars Kepler’s crime novels, the Apple TV series continues with Episode 2, “For Such a Time as This,” which also premiered on October 30.
The third episode arrives on November 6, 2026.
