Apple could ship between 1.2 million and 1.5 million OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro units in 2027, according to a new report from TrendForce. The forecast follows Apple’s October 28 announcement of its first MacBook Pro featuring a tandem OLED touchscreen, marking a major change in the company’s laptop lineup.

The new MacBook Pro comes in 14-inch and 16-inch configurations, starting at $2,899 and $3,399, respectively. However, TrendForce expects the premium pricing and continued availability of cheaper Mini-LED models to limit early upgrade demand.

OLED MacBook Pro Could Drive Significant Market Growth

Despite slowing notebook sales worldwide, TrendForce expects Apple’s entry into the OLED laptop market to accelerate adoption across the industry.

Apple’s new PROLED XDR display uses two OLED layers to deliver higher brightness, deeper blacks, and improved contrast. The touchscreen also supports direct interaction with macOS, including gestures, drawing, and manipulating content.

Samsung Display Secures Exclusive OLED Supply

According to TrendForce, Samsung Display currently holds the exclusive contract to manufacture OLED panels for Apple’s new MacBook Pro.

The company has dedicated part of its G8.6 A6 manufacturing facility in South Korea to Apple’s production requirements.

Key manufacturing details include:

  • Panel technology: Tandem OLED with integrated touch support.
  • Pixel density: 254 pixels per inch.
  • Manufacturing process: Generation 8.6 fine metal mask OLED production.
  • Major challenges: High production costs, strict quality requirements, and manufacturing yields.

Meanwhile, LG Display, BOE, and TCL CSOT are reportedly focusing on supplying OLED panels for future MacBook Air models.

Apple has already opened pre-orders for its OLED MacBook Pro, with availability beginning November 6. While the shipment figures remain estimates, the report suggests Apple’s adoption of OLED technology will play an important role in expanding the premium notebook display market.
