Apple TV has released the official trailer for The Last First: Winter K2, an upcoming documentary that follows the dangerous 2021 race to complete the first winter ascent of K2. The film will premiere globally on October 2, 2026.
Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, the documentary follows Icelandic climber John Snorri Sigurjónsson alongside Pakistani mountaineer Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid Sadpara as they attempt one of the toughest challenges in modern climbing. The newly released trailer shows brutal weather, crowded camps, exhausted climbers and the growing tension surrounding the historic expedition.

The trailer focuses on the pressure building around K2 as several groups arrive with the same objective. Snorri and the Sadparas are joined on the mountain by commercial expedition clients, climbing influencers with film crews and a Nepalese team determined to claim a historic achievement of its own.
K2 was the final mountain above 8,000 meters that had never been climbed during winter. That changed on January 16, 2021, when a 10-member Nepalese team reached the summit together, completing the first successful winter ascent.
However, the season continued after the historic summit. Ali Sadpara, Sajid Sadpara and John Snorri later launched another summit attempt, with Chilean climber Juan Pablo Mohr also joining the push.
Sajid eventually had to turn back near the Bottleneck after experiencing problems with his oxygen regulator. Ali, Snorri and Mohr continued higher, but they never returned. Sajid descended alone while search operations began for the missing climbers.
The documentary looks beyond the climbing disaster
The Last First: Winter K2 also examines how extreme mountaineering was changing around the time of the expedition. The film puts traditional climbers alongside commercial clients, influencers and professional film crews, while exploring the money, status and recognition attached to major climbing achievements.
Apple describes the documentary as a story involving determination, class, caste, money and power under life-and-death conditions. The trailer suggests those conflicts will remain central as different teams compete for the same historic prize while facing temperatures and weather capable of ending an expedition within hours.
The film previously premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival on January 22 before Apple acquired global rights in February. It later screened at other festivals ahead of its streaming release.
