Dark Matter Season 2 arrives on Apple TV on August 28, 2026, which makes this a good time to revisit exactly where Jason Dessen and his family ended up after the complicated Season 1 finale.
The first season ended with Jason finally reuniting with Daniela and Charlie, but getting his family back created another problem. Countless versions of Jason had also found their way into the same reality, and many believed they deserved the same life.

Dark Matter Season 1 ending explained
Spoilers for Dark Matter Season 1 ahead.
Jason1 spends most of the season trying to return to Daniela and Charlie after Jason2 kidnaps him and takes over his life. Jason1 eventually reaches his original world, only to discover that his journey through the Box created many additional versions of himself. Each Jason made different choices while searching for home, creating separate branches that eventually led several of them back to the same Daniela and Charlie.
That makes the family’s original reality dangerous. Some versions of Jason become violent while trying to claim Daniela and Charlie, leaving Jason1 with no realistic way to restore their previous life.
Jason2 eventually accepts what he has done. Instead of continuing his fight with Jason1, he helps the family escape and gives them access to the Box and the remaining ampoules needed to travel between realities.
The other Jasons ultimately allow Daniela, Charlie and Jason1 to leave. Charlie gets the important final choice, deciding which new world the family should enter. Season 1 ends as he opens the Box door and the three step into an unknown reality together.
What happened to Amanda and Ryan?
Season 1 also leaves Amanda and Ryan alive in other realities.
Amanda chooses to remain in a peaceful, technologically advanced version of Chicago after travelling with Jason1. Ryan, meanwhile, was deliberately stranded in another world by Jason2, although the finale shows him working with the compound used for Box travel.
Those loose ends now matter much more. Season 2 officially brings Amanda and Ryan together as they attempt to find their way home.
Where Dark Matter Season 2 takes the story
Season 2 starts with the Dessen family living quietly in what appears to be a safe world, but their escape has not ended their problems. Jason becomes increasingly obsessed with the Box, while Daniela grows more suspicious and unsettled by what is happening around their family.
The new season will also expand beyond the story covered by Blake Crouch’s original novel. Blair returns with plans to stop Leighton, while Leighton continues pursuing his vision of creating a perfect world through the Box. The recently released trailer also makes clear that the Box remains at the center of the new conflict.
Dark Matter Season 2 premieres August 28 with one new episode every Friday through October 30. With Jason, Daniela and Charlie back inside the multiverse and Amanda and Ryan searching for a way home, there are several unfinished stories ready to collide.
What do you think Charlie chose when he opened that final door, and where do you think the Dessen family ends up next? Let us know in the comments.
