Spoilers for Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 6 follow. Daniela’s stepfather is Gabriel Vargas, played by Gil Birmingham. He came into her life when she was eight, after her biological father’s death, and became the parent she still calls Papa. Their reunion matters because Gabriel is the first person outside the traveling Dessen family to notice that this Daniela does not belong to his world.
Daniela goes to Gabriel’s quiet property while her relationship with Jason is strained. She is looking for a place where she can feel like herself, away from the Box and the exhausting question of which version of a familiar person she has met. Gabriel offers comfort, but this reality also has its own Daniela. That makes even a visit to her father figure impossible to keep simple.

Gabriel knows Daniela by more than her face
Daniela spends time at the cabin and begins painting again. Gabriel recognizes the way she handles a brush. His familiarity does not come from a quick glance or a convenient scientific test; it comes from years of knowing her as a daughter. Their scenes briefly let the season focus on a relationship that existed long before Jason built his current crisis around the Box.

Gabriel also senses that she is carrying a painful truth. His advice about facing the past applies to her argument with Jason, but it becomes sharper once the episode reveals the secret she has not shared with him. She is a real Daniela, yet she is not the Daniela whose recent life Gabriel remembers in this reality.
A call from San Francisco breaks the illusion
Gabriel has spoken to his Daniela, who is living in San Francisco. The call makes the woman staying with him seem impossible. He can recognize her manner and her painting while knowing that his own stepdaughter is elsewhere. For a moment, he even considers whether something is wrong with his perception.
Daniela finally tells him that two versions of her exist and begins explaining the Box. The episode does not show every word of that conversation or resolve how Gabriel will live with the knowledge. It does show Daniela choosing honesty instead of pretending to be his world’s daughter. That choice protects the relationship from becoming another act of identity theft.
The reunion gives Daniela a choice of her own
Much of Dark Matter follows Jason’s efforts to find, protect or shut down a way between worlds. Gabriel’s scenes give Daniela a different kind of decision. She can confide in someone who knows her history without asking Jason to translate her experience for her. The multiverse still complicates that connection, but it does not erase the bond she feels with the man who raised her.
Gabriel cannot simply replace the life Daniela lost, and his own Daniela remains a separate person. Still, their meeting leaves her less isolated than she was when she arrived.
