‘Lanterns’ Season 1, Episode 1 Recap begins with Hal Jordan and John Stewart at very different stages of their Green Lantern careers before a strange case in Nebraska connects their lives across several decades. The HBO premiere quickly turns its superhero story into a murder mystery, ending with a major reveal involving Hal.

The story opens in 1996, when a young John Stewart watches Hal Jordan discuss his life as Green Lantern on television. Hal explains that Lanterns protect different parts of the galaxy and recalls being asked one important question when he received his ring: “Are you afraid?” John’s strict military father later puts his son through his own unsettling test involving an apple and a gun.
The story then moves to 2016. John is now training under Hal, although their relationship is already difficult. Hal eventually lets John wear the Green Lantern ring during a dangerous driving test, which activates an older recording of Hal and delivers a mysterious warning about Rushville, Nebraska.
Hal immediately travels to Rushville, where a deadly shooting has taken place at a football stadium. Sheriff Kerry Kane initially rejects his theory that aliens were involved, but Hal and John soon identify a suspicious man who tries to escape.
Their investigation also brings them into contact with the wealthy Macon family. William Macon believes aliens are secretly preparing to threaten Earth, while John unknowingly sleeps with William’s wife, Zoe, before learning who she is.
Hal proves the suspect is an alien
Hal eventually questions the detained suspect and realizes he is dealing with an extraterrestrial capable of passing as human. The man reveals enough information to confirm Hal’s suspicions before activating an explosive device inside his body.
Hal uses his ring to contain much of the blast, proving that something far larger is happening around Rushville. The case also raises questions about Hal’s own arrival as Green Lantern because the alien who originally gave him his ring crashed in the same area years earlier.
What happens to Hal Jordan?
The final scene jumps forward to 2026. John returns to a snow-covered Rushville and reunites with Kerry at the same football stadium.
She leads him to the bleachers, where Hal Jordan is sitting dead with a bullet wound in his head. His Green Lantern ring is missing.
There are no previous seasons to recap because Lanterns is currently in its first season. Episode 1 instead establishes the central mystery that will drive the episodes ahead: what happened in Rushville, who killed Hal Jordan, and where his ring went.
